This time, Equinox began very subtly, without a clear theatrical opening or an obvious start to the performance. It felt almost as though the performer was tuning the environment before the show began—a quiet, gradual transition into the performance that gently welcomed people into the space.
The duration of Equinox, from beginning to end, coincided with the time it took for the ice to melt and fill the vessel with water. Time became visible.
Snow fungus has long been valued in traditional Chinese medicine for its yin-nourishing properties, associated with hydration, balance, and longevity.
In the performance Reiko Kanazawa invited guests to pick their own snow fungus, complete their dessert, and eat it. Through gathering, assembling, and eating, the guests became integral to the work itself. Through the act of eating, visitors could experience time and the performance in a deeply embodied way, as the artwork became part of their own bodies.
